Self-cleaning filters application in seawater desalination projects in the Middle East
Project Background
A large seawater desalination plant located in the Middle East has a daily processing capacity of several thousand tons and supplies fresh water to the surrounding industrial areas and residential areas. The raw water for this plant is sourced from the Persian Gulf. The seawater contains a large amount of fine sand, suspended matter, and microorganisms, which pose a severe challenge to the filtration equipment in the front-end pretreatment system. The customer previously used ordinary basket filters that required frequent shutdown for cleaning, with short filter screen clogging cycles, high labor costs for maintenance, and the risk of secondary pollution from frequent opening and maintenance, which significantly affected the overall water production efficiency.
Customer Requirements
The customer urgently needs an automated, corrosion-resistant, and long-term continuous operation filtration solution. Specific requirements include: the filtration accuracy needs to reach 20 microns to protect the subsequent reverse osmosis membrane components; the material of the equipment must be resistant to high salt corrosion in seawater; it should have remote monitoring and automatic alarm functions to adapt to the trend of unmanned operation in the factory; and the control system protocol should be open to facilitate integration with the existing central control room DCS system.
Solution
According to the customer's operating conditions, we recommended the JYSCF-300-316 type brush-type self-cleaning filter. The cylinder body and filter element of this equipment are made of SS316 stainless steel, and the brush bristles are also made of SS316. The base is made of PP, which can effectively resist seawater corrosion. The filtration accuracy is 20 microns, and it can intercept most of the suspended particles in seawater. The pressure difference sensor is equipped to monitor the pressure difference inside and outside the filter net in real time. When the pressure difference reaches the set value, the PLC system automatically starts the electric flushing ball valve and the cleaning motor to complete the online cleaning and flushing. The entire process does not require any manual intervention. At the same time, the PLC supports Modbus RTU (RS485) and TCP/IP protocols, and can smoothly complete data connection with the customer's existing control system to achieve remote status monitoring and fault warning.

Installation and commissioning
The equipment is connected to the pre-treatment pipeline through a DN100 flange. The inlet and outlet directions are customized according to the customer's on-site pipeline layout, and the discharge port faces the reserved sump direction. After installation, our engineers cooperate with the customer to complete the PLC parameter setting. The cleaning pressure difference threshold and cleaning time are matched with the on-site water quality, and the customer is assisted to complete the configuration and commissioning of the control interface.
Operation effect
The equipment has been in continuous and stable operation for more than eight months since its commissioning. During this period, no production stoppage due to filter net blockage has occurred. The self-cleaning program runs reliably, and each flushing only consumes a small amount of raw water. The wastewater discharge volume is significantly reduced compared to the previous manual cleaning method. The customer reported that the cleaning cycle of the reverse osmosis membrane has been extended from the original two months to four months, and the expected lifespan of the membrane can be increased by approximately 30%. The remote monitoring function operates stably, and the control room can view the equipment status at any time. When an abnormality occurs, the system automatically pushes an alarm message, greatly reducing the burden of on-site inspection.
Customer feedback
The project manager of the customer stated that the introduction of this self-cleaning filter has significantly improved the operational stability of the seawater desalination pre-treatment section. The stainless steel material performs well in seawater, and no rust spots have been observed. The equipment is easy to operate and requires very little maintenance, and it is very friendly to the on-site operators.
Summary
This cooperation has fully demonstrated the reliability and economic efficiency of the JYSCF-300-316 self-cleaning filter under harsh seawater conditions. The intelligent self-cleaning system, combined with an open communication protocol, not only reduces labor and maintenance costs but also meets the requirements for automation and informatization of modern water plants. This case has also established a good demonstration application benchmark for us in the field of seawater desalination and high-salt wastewater treatment in the Middle East.
